Important Changes To Municipality Domain Name
April 15, 2002 On April 18, 2002, starting at
12:01 AM (Ottawa time), the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) will change
its registry rules with regards to the registration of municipality domain names.
Municipality could then register a new shorter domain name at the second level without
prefixes (i.e. Ottawa.ca), subject to CIRA's approval.
Currently, municipality have four levels for their domain
name: www.municipality.name.province.ca;
it can then be shorten to www.name.ca.
For example, the Municipality of West Nipissing currently have
their web address as www.municipality.westnipissing.on.ca.
It can now request for a shorter domain name such as www.westnipissing.ca as their new domain
name for their website. Subsequently, all emails addresses can be shortened too as well
i.e. johndoe@municipality.name.province.ca
changed to johndoe@name.ca.
Canadians want information about their community quickly. A long
domain name, however can easily be mistyped or forgotten, causing unnecessary frustration.
Shorter domain names are user friendly, and that means:
- Less likelihood of typing errors
- People get to the website quickly
- Confusion and frustration are eliminated
- Municipality can service people faster
- Loss of emails are less likely to occur frequently
