Going Up In The World Wide Web.
If you have a third level (e.g. yourname.on.ca) or fourth level
(e.g. yourname.toronto.on.ca) domain, you must re-register your domain under the new CIRA
regulations just like everyone else in the .ca world. The good news is that some sub-level
.ca domains may be upgraded. So, all of a sudden, you go from joeblow.city.province.ca to
somebodyimportant.ca.
A recent posting (11.07.2000) of a CIRA representative:
Q. We have registrants who have a third or
fourth level but want the second level but were not eligible for an upgrade prior to OTD.
What will they be able to do and when?
A. First we have to break it down as to
the reason for not being able to upgrade:
There is a conflict with another registration, i.e. xyz.ca and xyz.on.ca
or xyz.on.ca and xyz.ab.ca. IF all other registrations of this name do not renew it as of
Feb 01, 2001THEN by virtue of blocking up and down your clients 2nd level name will be
protected until the registrant decides to register the second level.
If the registrant could not upgrade because it registered the original name after July
31st, 2000. IF there were no other registrations made by UBC for this name at another
level by Nov. 8th 2000 THEN by virtue of blocking up and down your clients 2nd level name
will be protected until the registrant decides to register the second level.
