CA (.ca) GOVERNING BODY TO RELEASE FORMER MUNICIPAL INTERNET
DOMAIN NAMES
January
2003 - The
Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) will no longer
reserve dot-ca Internet domain names of Canadian municipalities
no longer listed in the Natural Resources Canada's Canadian
Geographical Names Data Base as of October 1, 2002.
Across Canada, many
municipalities no longer exist as a result of amalgamation or
other reasons. As a general rule, CIRA makes dot-ca (.ca) domain
names available to Canadians. CIRA does not bank domain names.
On March 20, 2003, CIRA will also be releasing
for registration on a first-come-first-served basis the
hyphenated version of municipal domain names of municipalities
that still exist (e.g. sault-ste-marie.ca) but are not listed as
hyphenated municipalities in Natural Resources Canada's Canadian
Geographical Names Data Base. CIRA will continue to reserve the
non-hyphenated version of municipalities that still exist (e.g.
saultstemarie.ca). CIRA will continue to reserve the hyphenated
names of municipalities whose names are hyphenated in the
Natural Resources Canada's Canadian Geographical Names Data Base
(e.g. Saint-Zotique).
The
list of names that will no longer be reserved and be made
available for registration on March 20, 2003 through CIRA's
daily release of domain names if not already registered can be
reviewed at http://www.caregistration.com/formerlyreservednames.htm
Many communities have
gone ahead to register their domain names through us recently.
If we cannot secure the domain name for you, your municipality
WILL NOT be charged for it.
Applications
will be processed on a "first-come, first-served"
basis, in accordance with
CIRA's Registration Rules and a
domain name may be registered for anywhere from 1 to 10 years. Municipalities
can make the switch effective immediately.
