Release
of Certain Municipal Domain Names
September
2003 - Natural Resources Canada manages a database of
official Geographic Names in Canada. Municipal names that have
recently been removed from the 'Canadian Geographical Names Data
Base' (CGNDB) will not be reserved, by CIRA, for the exclusive
use of municipalities.
Certain municipal names have recently been
added to the CGNDB and will, effective September 25, 2003, be
reserved by CIRA for the exclusive use of the appropriate
municipalities. The municipal names that will no longer be
reserved by CIRA will be released for registration, on a
first-come-first-served basis, on September 25,
2003.
The final list of names will be published on
the release date. The names will be released through CIRA's
daily "To be Released" (TBR) session. A tentative list
of the names that may be released can be found at

Over 150+ communities have
gone ahead to register their domain names through us recently.
If we cannot secure the domain name for you, your municipality
WILL NOT be charged for it.
Applications
will be processed on a "first-come, first-served"
basis, in accordance with
CIRA's Registration Rules and a
domain name may be registered for anywhere from 1 to 10 years. Municipalities
can make the switch effective immediately.
